The interview was very interesting and inspiring to watch. Cuero talked about how he first encountered prejudice when he moved away from home to play basketball and how he never really overreacted to it. He goes into a discussion that even though the discrimination against him was shocking to him, that he would never overreact. He said the reason he was able to stay so calm was that when he was young, his grandmother would always tell him to be good and respect others and he applied that lesson throughout his life and used it as a protective shield of good to prevent himself from overreacting. He has used the discrimination as motivation to do better and use his creativity to succeed. I love that he talks about creativity as a step by step process that doesn’t just spontaneously start, but it is a process that is important to enjoy every step of the way. He had said that creativity was based on innovation and it is not obvious, you need to shock someone because they wouldn’t have expected you to do it. With him being out of his element, he was fueled by the prejudice, culture differences, low expectations, and transcended into someone greater than anyone expected him to be, and he said that universality had an important role. Those who are universal have the ability to go above and beyond society and culture norms and expectations.
Overall, I found this interview to be very inspiring, I enjoyed Cuero’s positive outlook on everything he has been through and how he was able to stay positive through it all. Nowadays, it seems as though many people look for pity over small simple things, and not many people would leave their home away from your family into a place of discrimination to pursue their athletic career and education.
